The Town of Perth is located in the Eastern Townships of Ontario and is a perfect weekend destination for Ottawa/Gatineau residents. It’s a picturesque town with lots of character. Every year, on Labour day weekend, you can expect to find the Perth Fair in town.  I mean, who doesn’t like a fair?!

Week #92 Challenge: Visit the Town of Perth!

Perth Stone Bridge

Full-disclosure: I was granted free admission to the Perth Fair and a 10% discount for the night at the Parkside Inn and Spa, if you are a CAA member you get that discount too!

Perth happens to be a little less than an hour from downtown Ottawa which means you can easily make it a day visit or entire weekend getaway. You will find plenty of shops, historical sites, bakeries, restaurants, festivals and many beautiful bridges.

Perth Fair

The one and only Ferris Wheel!

First stop was the Perth Fair, admission being $10 for adults ($12 on Saturday), $4 for children ($2 on the Monday) and FREE admission for kids under 6.

You will find all the classic rides, game booths, merchandise and concession stands with candy apples, beaver tails, hot dogs, poutine, cotton candy and lots more.

Bowling Game

On a budget? No problem, the Perth Fair hosts plenty of free events and activities! You can visit the farm animals, demolition derby, live shows and contests, informative agriculture stands filled with interesting facts:

The Egg Facts!

Do you know what determines the colour of an eggshell, brown versus white?

Answer: The hens feather colour.

If you think you’ve seen it all… think again! Here you can witness or even participate in a live zucchini race. Yes this is actually a thing and it’s kind of priceless. See for yourself..

Thanks to Barb, the sweetest lead fair volunteer you could find, I was able to help feed one of two newborn calves Jelly Bean and Gum Drop. Both these little ones were unfortunately rejected by their respective mothers at birth. They were so cute 💕

Gum Drop is tan and Jelly Bean is brown and white!

The pouring rain didn’t take away any of the fun, if anything it was less crowded which isn’t a bad thing. With all the interesting attractions, the Perth Fair should be added to your calendar for next Labour day weekend!

To enhance your Perth visit, why not consider staying overnight. I did plenty of researching prior to booking a hotel and found this one to be most intriguing:

Perth Parkside Inn and Spa – Best Western

Perth Parkside Inn – View from The White House!

Selecting A Room

Parkside Inn Lobby – Waiting Area!

This Parkside Inn and Spa is a gorgeous hotel that offers lots of really great perks. For instance, it is located right next to a beautiful pond and is walking distance from the downtown Perth area. Every room offers:

– Clean modern style

 – Warm complimentary breakfast

– Hydro jet therapy tub

– Free parking

– High speed Wifi

– Microwave & refrigerator (great for storing cold snacks for the kids)

Prefer a more rustic experience? Then booking a room in The White House may be best. The rooms are an extension of the Perth Parkside Inn and Spa, located less than a minute walk away in a cozy cottage like white home. With a 5 star rating across the board, I couldn’t help but choose this option.

The White House Inn

Room Review

King Bed Room – #1
Hydro Jet Therapy Tub with organic lemon scented soap, cream, shampoo & conditioner!

The room was cozy and bright and the hydro jet tub added a really nice touch!

On the other hand, since our room in question was located by the entrance of The White House and isn’t particularly sound proof you could hear the back and forth of guests quite early in the morning, and I mean early early, which made it hard to stay asleep. For that reason I highly recommend staying in the main building or at least requesting a room on the second level in The White House.

Mineral Therapy Indoor Heated Pool & Hot Tub

This pool was really quiet and perfect for doing laps, you can end your swim with a relaxing soak in the hot tub. Loved the heat 🔥

Parkside Bistro Dining and Bar

The complimentary breakfast is served between 6am and 10am every morning. It’s a serve yourself type of restaurant with a bit of everything: eggs, cereal, home fries, meats, yogurt, fruit bread, pastries, coffee, juice and my personal favourite a waffle station.

DIY – Waffle Station

Aced it 😉 It was so fluffy and ,naturally, topped with Fulton’s Maple Syrup 🍁

Breakfast Table

Parkside Spa

Parkside Spa – Aveda

This Aveda spa offers all the services you could possibly want at really affordable prices. From facials, body treatments, RMT massages, makeup and hair services using Aveda products. Not to mention a full selection of packages, my personal favourite being the Manicure + Martini for $44 plus taxes.

You can find a list of all their services here!

I opted for a Butterfly Lash Extension – Half Set which takes about an hour beginning to end. I was a little nervous about the application as you can always react to the adhesive but it went very well. The estheticians were fantastic, very professional and accommodating. They fit my appointment in earlier which made my day.

You can add either length or fullness to your lashes, and with my lashes being quite thick I preferred adding length. They look really natural, I was happy 😍

The Town Tour

Prior to making your way to Perth make sure to take into consideration the operating hours. Although this town is quite touristic, many facilities close early on Sundays and remain closed on Mondays. Learned that the hard way ha ha..

This won’t be a concern to you if you only plan on exploring the beautiful scenery. There are so many hidden gems throughout the city, it’s worth navigating all over town to discover bridges, parks, waters sources, fountains and so much more.

Try to find this spot during your visit! Hint: It’s off a wooden bridge.

When it came to finding a restaurant for dinner, it was an entirely different story. Since it was a Sunday before a holiday most of them were closed, too busy or on the verge of closing. Just when hope was almost lost and my feet felt like they were about to fall off we found:

Fiddleheads Bar & Grill

A really cute and affordable pub restaurant with all the classics like wings, burgers, pizza, wraps, etc. Got seated at the bar which was cool. Since it’s elevated it made for an awkward eating arrangement but we didn’t care.

Grilled Vegetable Wrap with feta lemon sauce & a house garden salad!

Mex & Co.

I didn’t try Mex & Co. which serves Mexican and Canadian dishes, but it would have been my first pick. I am dying to eat on that Terrace, it’s too pretty!

Water front terrace

If you are seeking a more refined dining experience, I would recommend making an advanced reservation at The Stone Cellar Bistro! It looked very popular and they were kind enough to accommodate two aimless wonderers but it was just a little too fancy for me 😅

Heritage Sites

There is a museum and multiple historical buildings to visit, most of which were closed during the stay. I did get to see the Mammoth Cheese Replica 🧀 and didn’t take a full on shot as to not spoil the surprise for you but let’s just say that piece of cheese was massive.

Perth Chocolate Works

Perth Chocolate Works

This chocolate company, which originated in Manitoulin, is known for creating chocolate confections with Belgian Callebaut Chocolate! The Ferrari of chocolates as described by the vendor. It’s a perfect spot to grab a coffee, hot chocolate, cake or to purchase a little gift for someone back home!

You can also find more active things to do such as stand up paddle boarding, kayaking, mini-putting, skating and peddle karts through Perth Outfitters.

Exploring this town in the summer months really is a treat, it’s absolutely worth the hour drive. Plus with the Fall and Winter festivities approaching I can’t help but wonder how magical this town must be during the colder months 🎃 🎄  Why not start planning your little getaway to Perth and make your own discoveries?!
