Finding quality clothing that is both cute and affordable has become a rare occurrence in the last few years. At least, this has been my experience as countless stores have closed and very few new trends have appealed to my sense of style.
I’ve gone as far as ordering outside the country for clothing pieces that I liked, which is neither convenient nor affordable. That’s when it occurred to me that instead of limiting ourselves to larger clothing retailers why not try to locate smaller unique clothing shops?!
Week #81 Challenge: Create a unique outfit at Boutique 1861
If you are ever in Montreal, Boutique 1861 is a must see. I’ve yet to visit the shop in person but based on pictures and reviews it looks amazing 😍
About Boutique 1861
The Boutique 1861 owner, Castle Ho, brings women a line of clothing inspired by the 19th century, more specifically the Victorian era. A time of corsets, lace and fabulous skirts. The store carries anything and everything you could possibly want dresses, bottoms, tops, lingerie and all types of fashion and home accessories.
New items are introduced online each week which makes it so enticing to visit the store weekly, if not daily. I’ve even seen some items sell out on the day they are up for sale.
This has been the trickiest part for me. The clothing sizes can vary pretty drastically item per item. I wouldn’t recommend referring to the typical small, medium and large but rather look at the specific measurements indicated in the details. If you are hesitating about a piece or need any help, an online chat service is available during hours of operation.
Note: With my waist size being particularly small, I did have to get my skirt professionally altered.
Placing an order is easy and shipping took only a few days. They have the cutest packaging ever and I kid you not, it smelt of fruit (I want to say peaches 🍑) and came with a hand written note and a measuring ribbon.
Shipping is FREE for orders over $99 and sometimes they offer all day free shipping promotions!
One of the dresses I originally ordered was unfortunately too big, I didn’t pay attention to the measurements at the time. It was beautiful but the length, bust and waist were not flattering on me.
I had to pay for return shipping but you are given two options:
1 – Store Credit: Worth the value of the item returned + a bonus 5$ credit (helps cover part of the return shipping fee)
2 – Refund: Received a full refund of your returned item.
Personally, I opted for the Store Credit and ended up placing a second order a few months later. In my opinion it’s the best choice because the product turnover is so constant that it’s almost guaranteed you will find an item you will want to order.
This store offers AMAZING customer service. They gave me sizing advice, sent me various crop top and shoe suggestions upon my request, placed a skirt on hold for me and made the entire shopping experience a lot of fun!
A very talented colleague of mine, who’s identity will remain anonymous for now, was sweet enough to capture pictures of the summer outfit I purchased from Boutique 1861. The location of the photoshoot was honestly breathtaking, I am so thankful he was able to give me this opportunity. Here is how the Outfit photoshoot session turned out:

There is something so romantic, fairy tale like and timeless about this look. Hopefully it will inspire you to visit Boutique 1861 and create your very own unique outfit.
Happy Shopping xo
