Do you want to get away but lack the time, flexibility or budget?! Spending a night or weekend at a nearby hotel or resort can be the perfect remedy. It requires minimal travel time, represents an affordable option and the change of scenery can be enough to feel far away from home.

Prior to the holidays, I started looking into escape options in and around Ottawa for January. Somewhere calm and beautiful away from the city and thought about the Wakefield Mill instantly.

Week #45: Spend a night at the Wakefield Mill Hotel and Spa!

Full-disclosure: My stay was at a discounted rate.

The Wakefield Mill is not just your standard hotel, it’s a perfect mix between a bed & breakfast and a luxury hotel.

What’s unique about the facility?

This hotel offers accommodations in 3 buildings:

1- Heritage Mill: Fun fact this facility used to be an operating flour mill and was built back in 1838. Hence why the hotel rooms in this building give off a rustic and cozy vibe.

2- Red Chalet: Happens to be the original Miller’s home. You can stay in these quaint rooms with your pet for an additional fee.

3- Eco-river Lodge: A new modern building that has been LEED-Certified. It’s a luxurious and cutting edge facility meant to offer a one of kind experience.

Selecting your hotel room

One thing I love is that the Wakefield Mill Hotel and Spa has rooms for every budget. For a more lavish experience you can opt for The Grand rooms which offer amenities such as Jacuzzis, soaker tubs, king sized beds, fireplaces and so on.

We picked a Heritage Room, which is a more standard hotel room. It was a perfect size for a couple. I was pleasantly surprised to find complimentary chocolates and water bottles and the view from our 3rd floor room, overlooking the MacLaren falls, was gorgeous!! You also have access to bath robes in your room which comes in handy when visiting the hot tubs and pool downstairs.

Packages

The Wakefield Mill offers a wide selection of packages some are romantic while others are active, calming or social. They have also partnered with the Nordik Spa Nature, which is a short drive away, to offer a Nordik Experience Hotel and Spa package. See Week #55 to know more about the Nordik Spa.

My boyfriend and I opted for the Early Bird Bed and Breakfast Package as we were booking 30 days in advance of our stay and this package fit perfectly into our schedules.

Spa Eau Vive

The beautiful spa at the Wakefield Mill offers body treatmentspedicures and manicures, facials, massages by RMT and even yoga.

Special spa services are even available just for men and others are meant specifically to reconnect as a couple.

While browsing through the Spa Treatments, you will notice how reasonably priced the services are. I was pleasantly surprised! I didn’t try the services during our stay but plan on booking a treatment this summer.

Dining at the Wakefield Mill

When it comes to beverages and food, you have two options on site:

1- Muse Restaurant: Offers a unique taste experience with French and Québécois inspired cuisine with a subtle international influence. Maybe it hits home because I am French but I found the menu intriguing.

This makes a perfect place to enjoy a Sunday Brunch, reservations can be made ahead of time.

2- Heron Wine-Bar: If you enjoy pairing food with wine, this is a perfect spot for you. The menu options include items such as oysters, lamb, cheese and also expands to sweet treats such as crème brûlée.

Amenities

All guests at the Wakefield Mill have access to:

  • 20 acres of scenic property grounds which includes trails and lookouts
  • Outdoor salt water pool and hot tubs (the pool is closed during the winter)
  • Heron Lounge where you can play pool
  • Free Wifi Access

Planning your visit

Step 1: Determine the date and the duration of your stay.

Step 2: Explore the rooms and packages to establish what fits your needs.

Step 3: Feel free to reserve any dining or spa services prior to your stay. If you aren’t sure at the time of booking, you can always book the services upon arrival.

Step 4: Try to plan an itinerary to bring all you need to pack. For instance swimming gear, skies, snowshoes, workout attire, etc.

Our Overnight Experience

From the moment we arrived the customer service at the Wakefield Mill Hotel and Spa was fantastic! We never had to wait and everything was organized and ready for us. We just enjoyed what the room had to offer. It was so clean and cozy.

Breakfast is served between 7:30am and 10:30am at the Muse restaurant! I figured I would let my boyfriend sleep-in while I lounged around. I noticed the Nespresso coffee machine and figured I would make a little cup! As it started brewing it was louder than expected and I woke the poor man up, oops lol

We walked through the lounge on our way down to the restaurant. It was quiet in the morning but knew it had been a lively place the night before! As soon as we reached the restaurant, our waitress greated us and was quite honestly the best. She explained everything without even having to ask a question and made us feel welcomed! Having breakfast as part of your package is a great move, as it includes the cold food bar and the warm à la carte plates. Everything was incredibly delicious, perhaps even the best breakfast food we have ever tasted.

To the left is the Classic plate and to the bottom right is the Vegetarian Frittata!

After breakfast, we gathered our things to check-out before 11am. The staff let us know that we could still take advantage of the hot tubs after check-out which was really tempting!

We ended up going for a little sightseeing around the Mill. The surrounding scenery is breathtaking, it makes perfect sense why people choose to get married at the Wakefield Mill!

We followed a nearby path for a quick little hike.

While you are staying at the Mill, you should also consider visiting the shops in the Wakefield Village. We stopped by the bakery to pick up fresh bread  on our way home, I may have also picked up a blueberry scone!

An escape at the Wakefield Mill is definitely worthwhile and can help anyone fight those winter blues. Why not start planning your very own staycation, it’s only a click away!
