Week 122 – Trending Breakfast Food: HOLOS

 

We all know the saying: “You are what you eat!”.

 

Well I stand by this very much and almost instantly notice a difference when I introduce foods that aren’t as nutritious or full of sugar to my diet. Let’s just say, it’s NEVER good (although it does taste good sigh…).

 

It’s only when I fuel myself with healthy whole foods that my skin feels softer and looks better, I feel full longer, my energy levels are higher… to put it simply: I feel better.

 

So let’s focus on the meal that starts off every day: Breakfast!!

 

Breakfast foods are the absolute besttttt (at least in my opinion) and although you may be tempted to stick to a strict breakfast routine, variety is important.

 

Why? Because your body will perform best if it receives all the nutrients your body needs to strive. So let’s talk about a new healthy and delicious breakfast option that is now trending and, as you would expect from my blog, is made in Canada 🇨🇦.

 

Week #121 Challenge: Customize your breakfast with HOLOS

What is HOLOS?

 

HOLOS is a brand of pre-packaged breakfast food blends you can quickly prepare and customize. Essentially, HOLOS packages work similarly to overnight oats but with plenty of extras. Each HOLOS package contains a unique combination of quality superfoods which come in four delicious flavours:

 

 

 

Sam and Chris, the founders of this line, worked together to bring Chris`s unique breakfast creation to your table and this Canadian business has now launched across the Country. There is a clear reason for that! Not only is this breakfast good for your body, it`s also going to surprise you when you see what you can do with it!

 

Preparing HOLOS

 

If you are new to HOLOS, you may like to order the starter kit! I LOVE this kit since it comes with the glass HOLOS jar and all four HOLOS flavours (a total of 4 packages).

 

Keep in mind, if you are a new customer and order any other set of HOLOS packages, a free jar will automatically be included (no need to add it to your cart). This jar is the perfect size to fit one HOLOS package with any layers or toppings you wish to incorporate.

 

I really applied myself by testing existing recipes and even creating my own to show you what you can do with each HOLOS package. All you essentially need to prepare the HOLOS breakfast is milk (I use almond milk). If you wish to make it extra fun though, you want to check out what I did. So without further ado, here are fun concoctions you can make at home using HOLOS breakfast packages:

 

Layered Strawberry 🍓 + Raspberry Vanilla HOLOS

 

 

For this recipe, I followed the Maca Strawberry Cheesecake recipe available on the Holos website except I divided the recipe to make just one serving instead of two. It’s basically a three step process:

 

  1. Make the crust – place in fridge overnight
  2. Prepare the Vanilla HOLOS (as indicated on the package) – place in fridge overnight
  3. Add toppings, once you are ready to eat it

 

The toppings I used were freshly sliced bananas and strawberries as well as Made Good Strawberry Granola Minis for extra texture.

 

Dark Chocolate Mint & Coconut Cream HOLOS

 

 

I based this recipe on the one found on the HOLOS website but improvised a little as well. Here are the steps I followed, keeping in mind I divided the recipe to make one serving again:

 

What you need:

 

  • 1 package of Cocoa HOLOS
  • Chilled can of coconut milk
  • Banana slices
  • Mint dark chocolate pieces (Used Camino – Canadian brand)

 

Steps to follow:

 

  1. Prepare the Cocoa HOLOS (as indicated on the package) – place in fridge overnight
  2. Prepare the chocolate ganache, see recipe here
  3. Pour about 2 tbsp of coconut milk (enough to cover the top)
  4. Add toppings (dark chocolate, banana slices, etc.)
  5. Swirl the Chocolate Ganache over top

 

I intended to make whipped coconut cream but I learned the hard way that low fat coconut cream does not turn into whipped cream, you must use full fat. Live and learn! I simply poured the frothy coconut cream over my prepared Cocoa HOLOS as indicated in the steps.

 

Mint lovers: If you want an extra kick, you can simply add a few drops of organic mint extract when preparing your Cocoa HOLOS (see first step).

 

Apple Pie Chai HOLOS 🍎 🥧 + Coconut Whipped Cream

 

 

If you love apples, then you won’t want to miss out on this recipe. I improvised and created this delicious apple pie like breakfast using the Chai HOLOS. Here are the steps:

 

What you need:

 

  • 1 package of Chai HOLOS
  • 1 apple cut into small cubes
  • Cinnamon
  • 1 chilled can of Coconut Milk (full-fat)
  • 1 tbs of sugar

 

Steps to follow:

 

  1. Prepare the Chai HOLOS (as indicated on the package) – place in fridge overnight
  2. Place the apple slices in a pot (you may want to add a little water) and cook until soft (about 10 minutes). Add cinnamon to taste.
  3. Prepare you coconut whipped cream, see recipe.
  4. Once the apples cooled a little, place them over the Chai HOLOS, cover the apples with the coconut whipped cream. If you have, add a few extra apple slices or nuts on top.

To try or not to try?

 

The HOLOS breakfast foods are definitely worth it. The taste is top notch, you can easily customize them and they are filling and I mean very filling. If you can’t finish your HOLOS in one serving, don’t worry! You can seal your jar and save it for the next day.

The HOLOS Packages end up being very economical since one serving makes two breakfasts for me. Plus you can honestly pack it as a lunch or have it for dinner if you are in a rush. It’s a meal you will look forward to eating and that feels good for your body!
